Hiking the Olympic Coast always provides inspiration, especially the otherworldly landscape of Point of the Arches/Shi Shi Beach. On this warm, late sumer morning  we stood among the shadows of the sea stacks and looked out into the sunlight which illuminated the distant stacks and sea arch as the tide came in. 
With these large studio pieces I’m recovering the muscular brushwork and animism of my plein air pieces. This heavy, juicy paint was very characteristic of my work from the early 90s on. I’m thrilled with the dynamic water in this piece and the atmospheric sunlight glowing on the sea stacks—the rocks in the foregound shadowed by the stacks behind us.
