"I began creating twilight paintings while still in art school forty years ago. For three decades that was my focus. In the early 90s I created a body of work for a solo exhibit called Twilight Opalescence. These were paintings of paper lanterns, lit with candles, strung through my garden and painted until it was too dark to see the colors on my palette.
This is the first lantern painting I have created in several years. These paintings are a culmination of my art as a gardener, and an artist. The garden is hung with paper lanterns, lit with votive candles, and painted night after night. Lantern paintings are particularly challenging as there is only about a fifteen minute window when it is dark enough to see the lanterns glow yet light enough for the flowers to still show up. I must paint quickly which lends an energetic quality to the brushwork. I use a headlamp to help after dark.
This piece features hardy ginger— Hedychium ‘Tara,’ Canna ‘Ehemanii’ and Lobelia tupa. It is magical to paint at dusk with the wind off the sea high in the trees, swallows twittering overhead and the fragrance of gingers and lilies wafting through the garden."
